This package was assembled and sealed as part of the ceremonial documentation of the 300th anniversary of the Harvard Charter in 1950. It contains a handwritten letter from President James Bryant Conant "to the President of Harvard University in 2000," dated February 7, 1951, and a group portrait (photograph) of the Corporation, with the caption "300th anniversary Harvard Corporation , May 22, 1950," and signatures of Corporation members on the mat. The package also contains a press release with the text of a radio talk by Conant on "The Present Danger," February 7, 1951; a reprint of "A statement for a Subcommittee of the Committee on Foreign Relations of the United States Senate: A plan for peace" by Grenville Clark, June 1950; and a proof, dated December 29, 1950, of "You can still act for peace: Speak up now or never!" by James P. Warburg. The package was placed in the custody of the Harvard University Archives, where it was enclosed in a paper wrapper along with an additional photograph of the Corporation. The package was unsealed by President Drew Gilpin Faust shortly before her inauguration in October, 2007. President Faust referred to President Conant's letter in her inaugural address.

James Bryant Conant (1893-1978) was a chemist, educator and public servant. Conant taught chemistry at Harvard from 1917-1933; he served as Harvard's president from 1933-1953.
